I haven't talked much recently about the movies we've been renting from Netflix. This mostly has to do with the fact that we've primarily been renting TV series -- the fantastic first two seasons of
Deadwood, the last season of
Futurama, then the fourth volume of
Family Guy, the excellent
Up documentary series (
blogged), and so on.
We've also been on a Woody Allen kick, which I don't have much to say about except to say that all of the Woody Allen movies we've rented in the last couple months have been great:
Deconstructing Harry,
Play It Again, Sam (which he wrote and starred in, but didn't direct), and
The Purple Rose of Cairo, which along with
Match Point (
blogged previously) is Allen's personal favorite of the movies he's directed and which is stunning insofar as its ending completely breaks the conventions of its genre. I couldn't believe that was how he chose to end the movie.
At some point, for some reason, we rented
Eurotrip. I'm not ashamed to admit it. It was pretty awful, but I know I laughed at least once.
Last night we watched
Girl with a Pearl Earring, which Jaimee put in the queue after learning about
the painter and
the painting in her Baroque class. It was quite good -- and I'm speaking here as someone who doesn't normally enjoy period pieces -- and Scarlett Johansson, who I blasted in that
Match Point review, definitely brought her 'A' game to this one.
