Guardian profile of Chris Ware. It all makes sense now:
The loneliness of Jimmy Corrigan began as a newspaper strip about the loneliness of Ware in Chicago, where he studied art; but also as a way of preparing himself to meet his own father. Jimmy's father gets in touch, and they meet, excruciatingly awkwardly; five years later, his real father, who did not read the strip, coincidentally did get in touch, and they did meet, even more awkwardly, "a pair of regretful men". His father died before seeing the finished book.
