An impossible question leads to an irritating result, as
Beloved somehow takes home top honors. Nonsense. When I read it in tenth grade
Beloved was immediately short-listed for my coveted "Worst Book of All Time" award; when I read it again for a graduate class three years ago, I was more able to appreciate it, but still, it's not the best anything.
The runners-up include
Underworld and
White Noise (which probably would have been my pick), Updike's Rabbit Novels (come on),
A Confederacy of Dunces (enjoyable, but no), and a number of books by Philip Roth
, though oddly none of them Portnoy's Complaint. Portnoy's Complaint was published in 1967. (via
