The most elegant and moving novel of 2003, Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake, is being made into a feature film directed by Mira Nair (Monsoon Wedding, Vanity Fair). The comely author appears in the film as an extra. According to
this interview, Nair really got the novel, and the rough cut of the film does justice to what Lahiri was going for.
If you haven't read The Namesake, what are you waiting for? Even my lit survey students loved it more than anything else I've ever taught.
